My fiancé received a call during our engagement party informing him that his first love had been admitted to the ICU. Without a second thought, he rushed out, leaving me and all our guests behind.
I called and texted him numerous times, but he didn’t respond.
Late that night, I saw his first love had shared photos in the group chat of them wearing wedding rings. The man in the photos was my fiancé, Aiden Vaughn. In an instant, I went from a bride eagerly anticipating her wedding to a third party!
Aiden’s grandfather, who had always looked after me since I was little, collapsed from the shock and never woke up again.
Enraged, I questioned Aiden in the group chat, “What was our engagement party to you? Who am I to you?”
It wasn’t until after Grandfather was cremated and buried that Aiden finally replied to me.
“Sofia almost died. Amelia, just be reasonable!”
I wanted to say, "Aiden, let’s get divorced!"
But I suddenly remembered that we never obtained a marriage certificate. We didn’t even finish our engagement party. So, we never actually got married.
I had spent twelve years of my youth only to end up in an embarrassing situation.
There seemed to be nothing left to talk about between us.
I quietly blocked all his contact information.
After four years of admiring him and eight years of being his girlfriend, I thought we would eventually get married. But in the end, it was all just a fantasy.
Aiden liked quiet and soft girls, so I suppressed my nature and behaved like a gentle girl.
He said he didn’t like his girlfriend being too close to other men, so I kept my distance from my friends.
He also mentioned that he didn’t like his girlfriend wearing revealing dresses, so I replaced all the clothes in my wardrobe with sportswear.
After eight years together, I had changed myself into a completely different person.
But it wasn’t until his childhood sweetheart, Sofia Quinn, came back that I realized all his demands were just for me.
When Sofia made a fuss, Aiden would praise her for being cute. If Sofia introduced her friends to him, Aiden would be impressed and pleased. When Sofia wore a sexy, revealing dress, Aiden would stare at her with wide eyes.
So, everything about Sofia was good in his eyes.
Whenever Sofia called Aiden, he would leave me without hesitation to go find her.
Aiden always gave a loving look when speaking of Sofia. "Sofia is still young and needs me. You are different. You’ve lost your parents since you were a child and have long been accustomed to loneliness and independence."
My tragic life experience actually became an excuse for him to abandon me.
He didn’t even realize that I was actually a few months younger than Sofia.
I knelt in front of Grandfather’s grave, feeling overwhelmed by sorrow and loneliness.
From that moment on, I no longer had any family in this world, and no one would care whether I suffered or not.
My parents died in a car accident when I was young. Losing his son and daughter-in-law, Aiden’s grandfather raised both Aiden and me.
As he aged, his organs weakened.
He said that I was the only one he worried about and hoped to see Aiden and me get married, with Aiden cherishing me as he did.
But I let him down.
Before dying, Grandfather held my hand tightly, his eyes full of attachment and reluctance. "I’m dying, Amelia. How are you gonna live now?"
I stayed in the graveyard until dusk.
When I returned to the room, Sofia and Aiden were coming in, arm in arm.
Noticing I was there, Aiden pulled away from Sofia’s arm, and a trace of guilt flashed in his eyes. "Amelia, I didn’t know you were here…"
I gritted my teeth and glared at him. I didn’t want to cry, but my tears still flowed down.
"Amelia, please don’t overthink this. There’s nothing happening between Sofia and me."
"Sofia only has less than half a year left to live."
"She was really scared after learning the diagnosis and called me. Amelia, you’ve always been understanding. Can you please stop making it hard for me?"
I hadn’t even said anything, and Aiden had already begun to make his stand clear.
"Aiden, you say nothing is going on between you and Sofia. But you married her. What does that make me?"
