Lyra's POV
“In…inside the cell,” one of them stammered suddenly.
“Get her the hell out! And I will make sure all of you lose your license for arresting her without true evidence of the crime you claim she committed!”
I was frozen as I stood there and my body was vibrating. My mind went wild and my heart skipped a bit.
Who could be so aggressive about my wellbeing? The only person who would have done this would have been my father but he's no more with me.
Suddenly, one of the police officers appeared with the key of the door, his entire body shaking and trembling. “Why didn't you tell us that you're Cromwell's lost sister? We're all doomed because of you now,” he spoke, as he opened the door the fear and panic in his eyes were so evident.
“Cromwell's lost sister? What are you talking about, officer?” My voice trembled, and my brows furrowed.
“Come with me,” that was the only thing he said. At this point, I didn't know what to expect but I followed his lead.
As we got out, my gaze darted around as desperation was about to weigh me down. I flinched involuntarily with my entire body tense. “Mr Cromwell, she's here,” it was as if he turned to answer a phone call.
As he rotated his head towards me, a thrill ran down my spine and my brain seemed empty. I can't remember anything about this person standing in front of me, not even a little bit.
He parted his lips open, about to speak but hesitated again.
He took a few steps towards me and reached for my hand. “My sweet pumpkin,” he said slowly.
Suddenly, memories flooded my head and my mind was jumbled up with thoughts. “Can you recall something now?” He questioned after a while of silence.
Of course, it was only one person who used to call me that. I can recall that now, but he was not a Cromwell. How's this person a Cromwell? The wealthiest and prominent family in the whole of London.
“Gary?” That name escaped from my lips without my notice and I rushed to hug him tightly.
He nodded as his gaze remained glued on me. “Yes, this is Gary; your childhood best friend,” he revealed.
However the Gary I knew was not a Cromwell. Who could have informed him about my arrest then?
Gary took his eyes off me and turned to the police officers, “Anyone among you who as much as touched Lyra's hair will pay for it dearly for it, just bear that in mind,” he stated, with seriousness in his tone.
“Are you okay, my sweet pumpkin?” He gently pulled my chin up and asked.
I nodded, “Let's go home, so you can rest. For these, don't worry I will handle them and whosoever has a hand in your arrest,” his assuring words made my nerves calm.
As we drove to his house, his gaze drifted me. “How are you a Cromwell? I thought you were…,” then he placed his finger on my lips.
“I will explain, it's a long story. I know that's what's making you confused right?”
“Let's talk about you, Lyra. What are you doing in this part of the city? Who's running your father's company? I know he's a bit old now and needs you around him,” his questions made emotions fill my heart.
There was a deafening silence all of a sudden and my eyes burned with tears instantly, “I lost him,” I struggled to voice out, my entire body felt like it was on fire.
“Hey, it's okay you have me now and absolutely nothing will happen to you again,” he stated, as he cradled me in his arms.
“I'm not surprised they have taken over your father's legacy from you unwillingly too. But not to worry, I'm here for you .”
I tried to maintain a calm composure, at this point and be strong. “I went to prison for the death of my own father,” I continued.
“What?! Meaning they killed your father and framed you for it.”
“I'm back for them with everything in me Gary! They will pay for poisoning my father!”
He drew near to me more, his breath fanning me. “It's okay. That your stepmother, I've always doubted how loving she was.”
My stepmother is the nicest person I've ever met. Since I lost my mother at a tender age and my father remarried, I've never felt like she's not my real mother. Meanwhile, it was all a scheme to get to what she wants.
“It's obvious they're the ones now running the Jenkins group. They have really messed up with the wrong person,” he stated and smiles creased on my face, this is the time I've been waiting for all these years.
We arrived at his mansion. Words can't describe how enormous the house was. I'm not supposed to be surprised. I mean the Cromwells are the wealthiest family here and even beyond. “You're welcome, home. Let's go in.”
I was shocked to the core when we strolled inside.
Is that Kaylee or do they have a striking resemblance with each other? My mind raced, as my gaze frantically went back and forth on her.
“I was worried sick about you, brother. Where have you been?” She rushed to embrace him.
As her gaze drifted on me, her mouth fell open. That was when I presumed I was right. It's Kaylee, the maid Mrs Sawyer mistakenly stabbed or will I say she did it on purpose. How's Gary her brother?”
“Miss Lyra!” She screamed my name, let go of Gary immediately and hugged me tightly.
“Thank God, you have taken a bold decision to walk out of that bondage you call a marriage,” she said without hesitation and Gary turned to look at me.
“How did you know Lyra?” Gary's forehead creased as he asked.
“I know you're stressed and famished now. Fresh up and come down for dinner so we can talk further.”
“Kaylee, show her to the guest room so she can settle down.”
******************************
A few minutes later, I was done and I strolled down for dinner.
Surprisingly, I met the doctor who looked after me at the central hospital when I lost my baby. That clearly means he was the one who told Gary about me. Is that Peter?
“How are you doing now, Miss Lyra?” He asked me the moment I sat with them.
Gary cleared his throat, “Do you recognise him? He was the one who told me about you earlier. Peter; my brother,” he said.
“Oh my goodness! I thought as much. The way you showed up at the police station, I mean I was shocked.”
“Police station?” Kaylee raised skeptical brows. “For what?”
“It's Caleb, he claims he has evidence against me that shows that I stabbed you, not his mother.”
“By the way, are you Cromwell too? I'm happy you're fine now though.”
“Yes, she's our lost sister. Did you say the Sawyer's want you to pay for their crime?”
“What a fuck! After all the pains and hurts they caused you.”
“My sister has briefed me about everything that happened. The Sawyers really messed with the wrong people.”
He spoke as his gaze was fixed on his phone and he fiddled with it. “How far with the investigation I asked you to carry out?” He placed a call through to someone.
“That is great. Get everything ready for the court sitting. Mrs Sawyer must rot in jail! It's payback time!” He added and I felt a tingling sensation in my stomach as a glimmer of happiness washed over me.
