Chapter 3

Summer Firefly 629 words

Zach Nash booked a luxurious hotel room to celebrate Yvette Hewitt’s daughter Dana’s birthday.Yvette Hewitt curiously asked me, "Estelle, did you get a reply? Did she go to the hospital? She really doesn’t seem to care about the child at all..."He finally remembered me and impatiently called me from the hallway.“Estelle Nelson, are you done yet…?”“How hard is it for you to just check on Clarissa at the hospital? You’re not even responding!”“Why aren’t you saying anything?”The phone was answered by my best friend, Maggie Griffith.Listening to Zach Nash’s barrage of insults, there was a long period of silence from Maggie’s end. He must have really upset her. Maybe my best friend never expected Zach Nash to be such a shameless man.“Speak up! Estelle Nelson, are you dead?”Zach Nash snarled into the phone.“Yes, Estelle Nelson is dead.”My best friend finally managed to utter the words through trembling lips.“Maggie Griffith? Why are you answering? Stop playing games and let Estelle Nelson take the call!”“I told you, Estelle Nelson is dead.”Maggie Griffith slowly repeated, “Congratulations, now you’ll never have to lie about being busy with work again.”I hovered next to Zach Nash, watching a flicker of panic cross his face. But quickly, his expression turned to one of bitter mockery.“What’s this? Another one of Estelle’s tricks? Tell her to go to the hospital to check on Clarissa, or she might as well stay dead!”“Zach Nash, can’t you understand human language? I told you, Estelle Nelson is dead!”Maggie Griffith screamed into the phone, her voice breaking, “You heartless bastard, Estelle Nelson is dead. Are you happy now?”“Enough! My business with Estelle Nelson is none of your concern! What do you know! Get her on the phone!”Before Zach Nash could finish speaking, Maggie Griffith hung up.I watched as Zach Nash’s face turned red with anger, and couldn’t help but feel a bit wistful. After all, in front of me and my friends, he had always been so high and mighty, never facing such a setback. None of my friends had ever given him a cold shoulder before. We had many arguments, but it was always me who ended up compromising, humbling myself.Suppressing his fury, Zach Nash called my phone again. Every call he made was ignored. Finally, tired of his persistence, Maggie Griffith answered again.“Did Estelle Nelson go to the hospital to check on Clarissa?”“…” There was no response from the other end.“Get Estelle Nelson on the phone!”Maggie Griffith growled through gritted teeth, “Zach Nash, you’re a piece of trash!”My best friend Maggie Griffith knew all about the relationship between Zach Nash and me—how much I loved him, how good I was to him...So at this moment, her rage towards Zach Nash was evident. For someone like him who didn’t know how to be grateful, her reaction was actually quite civilized.“You!”“Zach Nash, you made so many calls but never once asked what happened to Estelle Nelson. You didn’t even bother checking Clarissa’s condition at the hospital! Your disgraceful affair is more important to you than your own wife and child!”As Maggie Griffith said this, she trembled with helpless anger, feeling that her best friend’s youth had been wasted on the wrong person.Zach Nash was silent.Maggie Griffith continued, “Zach Nash, Estelle Nelson is really dead. She got into a car accident with Clarissa. To protect Clarissa, she was shattered… Believe it or not, I won’t answer your calls or any questions about Estelle Nelson anymore.”“Please, let Estelle Nelson rest in peace.”
