Chapter 2

YUEJI 363 words

I leaned against the wall, trying to steady myself for a while. When I opened my eyes again, the nurse had long since vanished.

I dragged myself like a living corpse to the underground parking garage. Just as I was about to get into my car, I heard Melissa’s voice:

“Jace, do you think the baby will be a boy or a girl? The doctor wouldn’t tell us the gender. What color clothes should we buy for the baby?”

Jason gently tapped Melissa’s nose. “Let’s buy a set of clothes in every color. Then we can choose whichever color we like when the time comes.”

Melissa, delighted, rested her head on Jason’s shoulder. “That’s settled then. You’d better not change your mind.”

A wave of metallic bitterness surged in my throat, and I coughed heavily, drawing their attention.

Melissa, with a smiling face, looked at me. “Iris, long time no see. What brings you to the hospital? You should be resting if you’re ill. Don’t go running around just to keep an eye on Jace.”

With that, Melissa lowered her hand to caress her belly.

Unable to endure this blatant provocation any longer, I strode up to Melissa, used all my strength to yank her out of Jason’s embrace, and slapped her hard.

In an instant, Melissa’s cheek swelled, and blood appeared at the corner of her mouth.

The next second, Jason shoved me to the ground.

Jason glared at me fiercely. “Iris Hancock, are you crazy? If anything happens to Melissa, I’ll make you pay.”

Jason’s eyes were red, and his face was twisted with rage.

Melissa, crying, clung to Jason’s arm and pleaded, “Jace, stop blaming Iris. It’s my fault. I made Iris come to the hospital alone while she was sick. She’s just venting her frustration at me. Please, stop arguing.”

Jason sneered at me. “She doesn’t look like a patient at all; she’s more like a shrew.

“Say what you need to say and then get out.”

I slowly got to my feet. “I want some spending money—one million dollars.”
