IT was the dead of night, yet Amelia’s bedroom was alive with quiet energy. She paced slowly from the bed to the dressing table and back, her phone pressed against her ear. Her heart still raced from the evening’s unforgettable events, her mind replaying every single moment.
“You certainly wouldn’t have believed it. He proposed tonight!” she said, trying to contain her laughter, though it bubbled up despite her efforts.
There was a sharp intake of breath on the other end.
“What?! Are you serious?” Clara’s voice carried both shock and delight.
“Yes!” Amelia laughed, spinning in the center of the room, her slippers making soft sounds against the polished marble floor. “Can you believe it? I mean… I knew he was sweet, I knew he was attentive, but this? This completely took me by surprise.”
Clara’s laughter rang warm and bright.
“Amelia! You sound like a kid who just discovered the world isn’t cruel! I swear, I have never heard you so… giddy.”
Amelia paused in front of the mirror, brushing a loose strand of hair behind her ear.
“To think that you weren't even sure about this guy…” she murmured, a small smile curving her lips.
Clara chuckled softly.
“Of course! Who wouldn’t doubt? Two years is long enough to see where a relationship is going, and I just… well, I was cautious. I was looking out for my friend. But tonight? He has proved me wrong, hasn’t he?”
“You can say that again,” Amelia replied, twirling lightly and letting her eyes catch the soft glow of the chandelier above. “I’m still in shock. I mean… the ring, Clara. Oh my God, the ring!”
Clara’s voice rose in delight.
“You have got to show me! Snap a picture immediately, Amelia!”
Amelia giggled, lifting her left hand, the diamond glittering in the soft light of her bedroom. She angled it toward her phone, snapping a photo and sending it to Clara. “There. Happy?”
“Oh! My God, yes!” Clara squealed on the other end. “It is gorgeous! He really knows how to choose, doesn’t he?”
“I know,” Amelia breathed, still spinning gently as she admired the ring on her finger. “It’s flawless… the diamond is perfect. And Clara… it must have cost a fortune!”
Clara laughed.
“Well, you deserve it! After all, you have waited for a man who truly loves you, and it looks like he has finally proven himself.”
Amelia chuckled softly, her fingers brushing over the band as she walked toward her dressing table again.
“He really did. And the words… oh, Clara, the words! He said things… things that made me feel truly seen. I didn’t even know I needed to hear some of them, but I did. I did, Clara, and it was… magical.”
Clara hummed on the other end, warm and encouraging.
“I bet! That is my girl— Amelia Harlow finally seeing what she deserves. I am so happy for you, truly. And tell me— how did he do it? Where? How?”
Amelia leaned over the dressing table, resting her elbows as she smiled.
“Dinner… at that exclusive restaurant downtown. You know the one I have always dreamed about? The one I thought I would never have the chance to go to with someone who really loved me. And he… he took me there. It was perfect.”
“I can imagine,” Clara said, her voice softening. “And you— radiant as always, I bet.”
Amelia laughed, shaking her head.
“Radiant and terrified at the same time! When he got down on one knee… Clara, I thought I might faint! And then he handed me the ring… I couldn’t believe it. I mean, the sparkle alone… it’s blinding.”
Clara let out a soft gasp.
“Oh my God, Amelia! That’s amazing! I’m so happy for you. Honestly, I was beginning to worry he might not step up. But clearly, he did.”
Amelia smiled, pacing again, her reflection passing by the mirror repeatedly.
“I know! And you know, the crowd at the restaurant? Some people were watching, some even recording. I was completely overwhelmed. I didn’t even know where to look. And yet… it was perfect. I couldn’t stop smiling.”
Clara laughed warmly.
“You deserve it, Amelia. You really do. And I cannot wait to hear all the little details later. You are glowing, girl!”
Amelia stopped mid-step, a soft laugh escaping her.
“You are right. I am glowing, aren’t I?”
“Yes! Radiant, thrilled… I can hear it in your voice! This is exactly how you should feel. And oh— how does it feel to finally have the man you have dreamed of?”
“Oh, Clara…” Amelia sighed, her voice softening with emotion. “It feels… safe. Warm. It feels like finally breathing after holding my breath for years. And the ring… it’s more than beautiful. It’s symbolic. I have waited so long to feel this kind of love again. It’s overwhelming.”
Clara chuckled.
“I’m so glad. Truly. But Amelia, I have to ask, how did he look when he proposed?”
Amelia’s lips curved into a smile as she leaned against her dresser.
“Incredible. Handsome as always, confident… and yet gentle. The kind of man who makes you feel cherished, even in front of strangers. I couldn’t stop looking at him. And the way he said my name… like it belonged to him. Clara, it was perfect.”
Clara laughed, delighted.
“I am so happy for you! Really. Four years, Amelia… I knew it was going somewhere, but tonight… he has gone above and beyond. You must be on cloud nine.”
Amelia nodded, walking to and fro across the room, her mind still reeling with excitement.
“I am. I really am. And I can’t stop thinking about the future, about… us. It’s overwhelming, but so good, Clara. So good.”
A soft creak interrupted her thoughts. Amelia glanced toward the doorway and saw a familiar figure standing there. Hazel. Standing tall and serious, arms crossed, eyes sharp.
Amelia’s heart softened immediately. She smiled gently at her daughter.
“Um… let me call you back, Clara,” she said, her voice warm, careful not to startle Hazel.
“Of course, Amelia! But don’t keep me waiting, I need all the details!” Clara’s voice called out before the line went quiet.
Amelia ended the call and slipped her phone into her purse. Turning fully toward Hazel, her expression was soft, maternal.
“Well,” she said gently, stepping closer, “it looks like we have a little catching up to do.”
Hazel’s lips pressed together, her expression unreadable, but her eyes lingered on the sparkling ring on her mother’s finger. For a moment, Amelia thought she saw a hint of a smile tug at the corner of her daughter’s mouth.
And for the first time tonight, Amelia felt truly complete.
