"Fire! Fire!"
Trapped in the hotel room, I frantically beat on the door, but it was futile.
I tried to stay calm as I rubbed my abdomen, reassuring, "Don't be afraid, baby. Daddy is a firefighter. He will come to save us!"
Yet, despair grew within me.
I dialed my fiancé's number repeatedly, but there was no answer.
At that moment, the piercing siren of the fire truck blared from below, and I clung to it like a lifeline, desperately rushing to the window.
Soon, I saw a familiar figure appear in my line of sight.
It was Joey!
He was here!
Elated, I waved at him as if seeing a glimmer of hope.
"Joey! I'm here! Save me!"
However, my cries did not elicit a response from Joey.
Without hesitation, he rushed into the adjacent room, rescuing Sophia from the flames with a look of intense worry.
I watched helplessly as Joey, with Sophia in tow, left the scene without looking back, despair engulfing me like a tide. Tears were scorched dry by the flames, and my throat was too hoarse to utter another sound.
I felt as if I had died!
My soul floated out of my body, drifting in midair.
I witnessed firefighters braving the blaze to rescue me, while Joey anxiously stayed by Sophia's side, continually asking the doctors, his eyes filled with concern.
"Doctor, how is she? Is she okay?"
"Her leg was crushed by a cabinet; it might be a compound fracture. She needs to be rushed to the hospital for surgery immediately."
The ambulance arrived with a wail, but Sophia clung desperately to Joey's hand, refusing to get in.
"I'm not going to the hospital. I'm scared…"
"Sweetheart, listen, I'm coming with you. I won't leave your side," Joey soothed her with patience, eventually carrying her into the ambulance.
I watched coldly, my heart wrenching.
I remembered when I fell down the stairs and my ankle swelled up like a bun, Joey had merely said, "You deserved it!"
As the ambulance was about to leave, I saw two firefighters carrying a stretcher from the fire, on which lay a person severely burned and injured.
All the doctors were called over.
Floating above, I saw my own mangled body on the stretcher, the only thing still glinting was the diamond ring.
Yet Joey merely glanced indifferently, noticing it but disinterested as always in wasting time on others. He turned back to the ambulance, tightly holding Sophia's hand, fearful she might be scared again.
In that moment, my heart was utterly broken.
At the same time, I heard the cold voice of a doctor: "The patient has no vital signs. Time of death…"
