Eve's Pov
It was Nathan's wolf.
‘Goddess,’ I exhaled secretly, wondering why I was lacking my usual composure.
Once again I repeated my order, “Okay let's go!”
Just as we were about to rush into the fray, I caught sight of more than five fierce-looking wolves. We were surrounded on every side.
Without thinking, Nathan's wolf charged forward, intent on taking down the enemy. But I shouted, "Stop!" and he skidded to a halt, his muscles coiled like a spring.
“What? Are you scared, Alpha?” The voice sounded from behind me. I turned back and it was a burly looking man, riddled with scars on his face and hands.
"No," I said, my voice calm and measured. I gripped my sword tighter, and tilted my head slightly to the left, a smile playing on my lips. "I just think we should try a different approach."
The wolves looked at me, confused, their ears perked up in curiosity. But before they could react, I leapt into the air, my sword glinting in the moonlight. I swung it in a wide arc, and by the time my feet were down, two of the wolves' heads rolled to the ground.
The remaining wolves sprang into action, snarling and baring their teeth. But I was faster, my movements fluid and precise. I ducked under the snapping jaws of one wolf, and swiped my sword, taking out the wolf's front legs. The wolf fell to the ground, howling in pain. I turned to face the other wolves, my eyes narrowed and my stance defensive.
I took out the remaining wolves, my movements swift and sure. The last wolf fell to the ground, defeated. I prepared to take on the next wave, but as I took a step forward, I caught a scent in the air. It was gone as quickly as it had come, but I could have sworn I recognized it. It was familiar, yet it was out of place. Was it just my imagination, or was something else going on?
I shook my head, trying to clear my thoughts. I turned to look at the fallen wolves, they were already changing back to their human forms. Nathan was nowhere to be found.
I picked a swift movement and immediately I tensed, my muscles coiled and ready for action. But as the scent hit me again, I paused, confused.
Twisting my neck slightly, I shouted into the distance, “Step forward into the moonlight, if you dare,” but there was no movement, no words, no sound, just nothing.
I stood there in the silence, my heart pounding in my chest. The faint scent still hung in the air, yet nothing else happened. I waited for a moment, then a minute, but there was no further movement, no sound. The only thing I could hear was the soft rustle of the wind through the trees.
I looked around, straining my eyes to see into the darkness. I was starting to think I had imagined the whole thing, when suddenly, a low growl broke the silence. It was followed by the soft crunch of footsteps on the ground, and the rustle of leaves. Something was out and it was big, definitely bigger than the ones I had taken down.
My heart thudded in my chest, my breath coming in short, sharp gasps. My hand tightened on the hilt of my sword, my knuckles turning white with the strain. The growling continued, the sound getting closer and closer. I could hear it breathing now, its breath coming in hot, angry pants. I steeled myself, preparing for whatever was about to come out of the darkness.
The scent was overwhelming now, filling my nostrils and making my head spin. It was a dizzying mix of sweetness and decay, something that seemed impossible and yet was undeniably real. I felt myself sway on my feet, trying to steady myself against both the surge of nausea that was rising in my stomach and the sweetness I wanted more of. I struggled to keep my balance, my mind reeling as the scent grew stronger and stronger.
And then, it happened. Out of the darkness, a pair of glowing red eyes appeared, staring at me with an unblinking gaze. I was frozen, unable to move or speak. My mind went blank, my body numb.
I stood there, transfixed by those glowing red eyes, my senses dulled by the overwhelming scent. Time seemed to slow down, each second stretching out into an eternity. My heart was pounding, my thoughts racing. What was an Alpha Rogue doing on our territory? What did it want? And what would happen to me if it decided to attack?
I mentally berated myself: "Shut up, Eve. You're an Alpha female - or at least you will be. Stop getting distracted and focus on what's in front of you."
And then, as if the world had suddenly been set back in motion, the creature began to change. Its limbs melted away, its body reshaping itself into a human form. I watched, transfixed, as the wolf transformed before my eyes. And when it was done, it stood before me in all its human glory.
He was tall and broad-shouldered, with chiseled features and dark, wavy hair. His eyes were a deep brown, like rich, molten chocolate, and they seemed to glow from within. I felt my heart skip a beat as I looked at it, my breath caught in my throat. I couldn't help but feel a connection to the mysterious rogue, despite the danger it represented.
The rogue stood before me, his eyes fixed on mine. I could feel his gaze boring into me, probing my thoughts and emotions.
As I stood there, facing off with the rogue, I felt a strange tugging sensation in my chest. It was a sensation I had never felt before, but it was so intense that it took my breath away. I felt like I was being pulled towards the rogue, as if an invisible string was connecting us. My heart was racing, my body trembling with an emotion I couldn't name. And then, I heard a voice, soft and sweet, speaking directly into my mind.
"Mate."
