Chapter 3

Summer Firefly 478 words

Jayden came home early.

When he saw me, I was sitting upright on the sofa.

He rushed to grab my ID and tried to drag me out.

"Let’s go, we need to go to the hospital."

I waved my hand and couldn’t break free.

“I’m really fine, no need to go to the hospital,” I said softly. “By the way, there’s something I need to tell you. I want to…”

Before I could even say the word “divorce,” my gaze was drawn to the lipstick stain on his shirt collar.

Even though I knew well that it’s common for something to happen when a man and a woman are alone together, seeing that glaring red stain made me instinctively want to vomit.

And I did.

Jayden, seeing this, grew even more anxious, pulling me out the door and speeding to the hospital.

Once we were in the examination room, I couldn’t even bring myself to mention the word “divorce” again before I was overwhelmed by a barrage of questions from the doctor.

“Are you married?”

“Are you currently trying to conceive?”

“When was your last menstrual period?”

...

After answering a slew of questions, the doctor handed me a list of tests and said, “You might be pregnant. I’m giving you a requisition for tests to check estradiol, progesterone, and HCG levels.”

I stumbled out of the examination room, dazed.

When we first got married, I had fantasized about having a little one. But previous check-ups had revealed I had a uterine cyst, making pregnancy difficult. Even after we were married, Jayden and I had used no protection but still didn’t conceive.

Ironically, just as I was planning to divorce him, I showed signs of pregnancy.

Holding the requisition slip, my mind was a whirlwind.

I had decided to divorce Jayden. But if I really was pregnant, what should I do? Should I really terminate it?

Back in the waiting room, I hesitated on how to tell Jayden about the possible pregnancy. But before I could figure out what to say, Jayden’s seat was already empty.

A message from WhatsApp popped up.

“Rosalind said there are many paparazzi outside trying to take her picture. She can’t go out and hasn’t had breakfast. Wait for me at the hospital, I’m going to bring her some food and will be back soon. Love you.”

My eyes lingered on the words “Love you,” and my hand holding the phone began to tremble involuntarily.

Fine, now I don’t need to dwell on it any longer.

After all, he has already made the decision for me.

I responded flatly with a “Okay.”

The sun blazed outside, while the air conditioning inside was biting cold.

I walked alone toward the lab, feeling as if I were wrapped in a suffocating cold.
