Chapter 2

Summer Firefly 584 words

I admit I was rash and acted without fully understanding the situation. But isn’t this an issue beyond just me? Who would want to be a human shield and continue with a resolute expression?

I forced a dry laugh. “Mr. Hicks, we can’t do that.”

“You’ve already announced that. Now you want to back out?” The man’s eyebrows were raised in mockery, and the gleam in his eyes made me shiver involuntarily.

If it weren’t for the current circumstances, I’d think I’d been handed a script about shirking responsibility.

“Mr. Hicks, you’re exaggerating.”

“Call me Nelson.”

I suspected he might have been scheming, but I had no proof. Could it be that the setup of my wedding was too shabby and offended this noble boss?

The noise around me grew louder, heading towards the backstage. I had only one thought: the best strategy was to leave.

“Mr…ahem.” Under his gaze, I weakly revised my words. “Nelson, how about we find another time to discuss this properly? I promise you’ll be satisfied.”

“Make sure I see you tomorrow, or else…”

I didn’t catch his next words, only thinking about getting him out of there as quickly as possible.

“Alright, alright.”

I managed to persuade him to leave. Seeing his displeasure as he departed made me feel like I should just submit my resignation at the company.

The wedding ended in a rush, leaving my parents in stunned disbelief.

“Ellie, where did Aaron go? What’s going on?”

When my mother barged into the room, I was packing up clothes.

I shrugged nonchalantly. “Just as I said, Aaron ran off.”

“So, who was the man on stage with you?”

“My boss.”

“Well, your boss seems quite decent. If it weren’t for him, you’d really be…” She patted my shoulder sympathetically, and I felt like her gaze conveyed the meaning of a pitying puppy.

At that moment, the sense of humiliation I felt reached its peak.

I knew there were many of my parents' friends outside, but she didn’t explain how to handle it and just told me to stay calm.

I heard that when Aaron arrived at the scene later, only the cleaning lady was left. When she saw him, she curiously asked if she was the person on the poster outside.

Upon learning what had just happened, Aaron ran to my house, repeatedly knocking on the door after entering the wrong password.

“Elena Carter, get out here! We need to sort this out face to face!”

“Who told you to spread such nonsense about eloping!”

“Rumors are flying everywhere. The company has put me on unpaid leave!”

I sat on the couch, amusingly turning off the TV to listen to him.

What a classic scumbag scenario—better than any drama on TV!

Unpaid leave? Why not just fire someone like you outright!

Such a man who wants more than what he have, even a hungry, desperate dog has more dignity than him!

After a long time, the noise outside finally ceased.

I crouched and moved to check the situation, not even bothering to put on shoes.

Knock, knock—

I pressed my face against the door cautiously, only to be startled by a sudden knock.

I fumbled in panic, like a thief caught in the act.

The hand I had instinctively rested on the doorknob pressed down, and the door swung open.

“Elena, I didn’t expect you to be so proactive.”
