Chapter 4 Chapter 4

Elena’s heart slammed against her ribs as the attic stairs groaned under Marcus’s heavy footsteps.

She moved with desperate speed, shoving the laptop and USB drive under the loose floorboard and covering it with a dusty rug.

There was nowhere to hide in the cramped space, but she pressed herself into the shadows behind an old wardrobe just as the door burst open.

Marcus stepped inside, flashlight beam cutting through the darkness like a blade. “I know you’re here, Elena. That nosy old butler couldn’t keep his mouth shut.” His voice was low and venomous. “You think you can steal what’s ours? Father’s little pet project?”

He kicked over a stack of her hidden books, sending them scattering.

Elena held her breath, fingers wrapped tightly around the small kitchen knife in her pocket. For a terrifying moment, the flashlight beam swept inches from her face.

Then, from downstairs, Richard Voss’s voice thundered through the mansion’s intercom system, weak but commanding. “Marcus! Get down here immediately. We need to speak.”

Marcus cursed under his breath. “This isn’t over,” he snarled into the empty attic before storming out, slamming the door behind him.

Elena waited until his footsteps faded completely before collapsing against the wall, gasping for air.

She retrieved the USB drive and stared at it.

The evidence of poisoning was real.

Her father was being killed slowly, and her siblings were almost certainly behind it.

She had to reach him before it was too late.

The next morning, a formal summons arrived via Mr. Harlan.

Her father wanted to see her privately in his study again, this time with strict instructions that no one else was to be present.

Richard Voss looked frailer than ever when Elena entered.

His skin was pale, and his hands trembled slightly as he gestured for her to sit. Yet his eyes still held that sharp, calculating intelligence that had built an empire.

“Elena,” he began without preamble, “close the door.”

She did, then took the seat across from him.

The copy of the will still rested on the desk between them.

Richard leaned forward. “You are the only one who sees the numbers like I do. Yesterday at the board meeting… that level of insight? Marcus has been running divisions into the ground with his arrogance, and Sophia cares only for the prestige and money. But you… you understand the soul of this empire. The patterns. The risks. The opportunities.”

He paused, coughing into a silk handkerchief.

When he pulled it away, Elena glimpsed a faint trace of blood.

Her stomach twisted.

“I don’t have much time left,” he admitted quietly. “The doctors call it a mysterious degenerative condition. But I suspect… foul play. I’ve been feeling worse for months.”

Elena’s voice was steady despite the storm inside her. “I know. I have evidence.”

She hesitated only a moment before sliding the USB drive across the desk.

Richard plugged it in and reviewed the files in silence.

His expression darkened with each passing minute.

“Those ungrateful children,” he whispered. “I built this for the family, not for them to tear it apart.”

Over the next two hours, Richard did something he had never done before, he began mentoring her.

He pulled out confidential reports, balance sheets, and strategic plans.

Together, they pored over the Voss Group’s global operations.

Elena’s questions were sharp and insightful, her suggestions bold yet calculated.

Richard’s eyes lit up with genuine pride as she dismantled a flawed overseas investment strategy and proposed a far more lucrative alternative involving emerging markets in Southeast Asia.

“You have it,” he said at one point, voice filled with quiet awe. “The instinct. The brilliance. Your mother had fire, but you… you have vision.”

For the first time in her life, Elena felt tears well up. “Why now, Father? After all these years of letting them treat me like dirt?”

Richard sighed heavily. “Because I was a coward. I thought ignoring you would protect you from their jealousy. I was wrong. But I intend to make it right. Starting today, you will shadow me. Learn everything. When I’m gone, you will be ready.”

They continued for hours.

Richard taught her the hidden levers of power, offshore accounts, political connections, rival weaknesses.

Elena absorbed it all like a sponge, her genius mind cataloging every detail.

Unbeknownst to them, just outside the study door, Marcus and Sophia pressed against the wood, listening intently.

Marcus’s face was purple with rage.

Sophia’s expression had twisted into something cold and murderous.

“They’re really doing it,” Sophia hissed. “He’s handing her the keys to everything.”

Marcus clenched his fists. “Then we accelerate the plan. The poison in Father’s medicine. The ‘accident’ for her. We can’t wait any longer.”

Sophia smiled darkly. “Dr. Hargrove is already on standby. One more dose tonight, and Father won’t be able to change anything. As for Elena… we’ll make it look like she couldn’t handle the pressure.”

Inside the study, Richard suddenly clutched his chest, face contorting in pain. “Elena… the safe behind the painting. Combination is your mother’s birthday. There’s more proof there. Take it and…”

He collapsed forward onto the desk.

“Father!” Elena cried, rushing to his side.

As she tried to help him, the study door flew open.

Marcus and Sophia rushed in, feigning concern, but their eyes gleamed with triumph.

“Call the doctor!” Marcus shouted, already reaching for the phone.

But as Elena looked down at her father’s labored breathing, she noticed something terrifying, his lips had a strange bluish tint, the same color mentioned in the poisoning reports.

Richard gripped her hand weakly, his final words barely audible: “Trust… no one.”

The private family doctor arrived within minutes, but Elena’s instincts screamed that this was no ordinary episode.

As chaos erupted around her father’s collapsing health, Sophia leaned close to Elena while pretending to comfort her and whispered softly.

“Next… it’s your turn.”
